Write Together Berlin
In Sydney, I attended a group called Write Together. We’d meet in a pub once a week and work independently on our writing projects. There was no workshopping or critiquing – we’d just sit quietly and write. It was perfect for me, because I was working on a first draft and had decided I wouldn’t do any revision until I’d reached the end. My first drafts are always appalling. Even though we didn’t share our work, there was something energising in writing with others.
When I arrived in Berlin in late 2014, I tried to find the local Write Together group. I knew there was one in London, so I’d assumed I’d been part of an international program. I was mistaken – there was no such group in Berlin. Still wrestling with my chaotic first draft, I wasn’t interested in joining a workshopping group, so the only solution was to create my version of Write Together.
By the end of the first month over 80 writers, working in all different languages and genres, had joined the group. Three months later, Write Together Berlin has 200+ members. A year later, our membership had grown to over 1000. It’s wonderful being able to offer the community a quiet and non-competitive space where they can enter the writers’ cave without being alone.
Huge thanks to Another Country for hosting Write Together Berlin. For group details and to RSVP to a writing session, visit our Meetup page: http://www.meetup.com/writingwriters/
Another Country hosts a range of writing and story-telling events. For more information, follow their Facebook page.
